Cozy? Check. Charming? Check. Reasonably priced? You bet.
This 14-room boutique hotel became my home away from home in 2015 as I began to explore the mysterious lands outside Los Angeles. Smaller and cozier than its larger (and more famous) cousin, the Glen Tavern Inn, the property features free off-street parking; a variety of room configurations to suit solo travelers, couples, and families; free and reliable WiFi; and a lovely back patio and terrace that can accommodate up to 50 people. Even if you’re not hosting your wedding party or other event here, the patio is a great place to stargaze with a bottle of wine.
The Queen rooms on the second floor typically include a grandfather-style or other chair and a small writing desk. Bathrooms are big enough to hold meetings in. Most rooms include a small kitchen area with microwave and mini-fridge. (And you'll want the latter because you'll definitely be bringing back savory leftovers from area restaurants.) Some rooms feature a fuller kitchen with sinks and cupboards.
The Santa Paula Inn is owned and managed by a husband-and-wife team with several years of hotelier experience between them. I still see Peggy about town occasionally—and she still remembers me all these years later! I am forever grateful for her hospitality and cheerful spirit. She and the staff are friendly and helpful and will always make you feel welcome.
The Inn is conveniently located in Santa Paula's Historic Downtown district, within walking distance of local faves such as Rabalais' Bistro, the train depot and Agriculture Museum, and the Santa Paula Art Museum.
